Cobb NAACP to honor community leaders

October 26, 2011 03:21 PM |

MARIETTA — The Cobb NAACP will honor community leaders Friday night at its 30th annual Oscar R. Freeman Fund Awards Banquet at the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Hotel & Conference Center at 500 Powder Springs St. in Marietta.

The black-tie optional event will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The awards program will begin at 8:15 p.m.

Awards are given to community leaders for achievement in a variety of fields, including community service, education, youth activities and business, for their work in Cobb County.

Past honorees include retired Lockheed Martin executive vice president Lee Rhyant, former Cobb school board member Betty Gray and state Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan.

This year’s Community Service Award is being awarded to Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Marietta for its work serving the homeless.

This year’s Business Award will also be awarded to a recipient that mentors youth.

The Marietta Blue Eagles offers youth football and cheerleader for boys and girls, ages 4 to 12. The nonprofit began in 2000 from an idea that arouse from a meeting with Marietta police officers concerned with youth who had nothing to do after school. Since then, hundreds of children have participated in the program.

Garland and Sherol Baker run the program and also sit on the board of directors.

“This husband and wife team has been true mentors for the kids for the last 20 years,” said Bonner, who added that her grandchildren have learned sportsmanship on and off the field through the program.

In 2010, the event was renamed the Oscar Freeman Fund Banquet to honor the late, past president of the NAACP’s Cobb branch. This year’s banquet co-chairs are Kim Gresh, S.A. White Oil Co. president, and Pedro Cherry, Georgia Power’s metro west region manager. The honorary co-chairs are Shan Cooper, Lockheed Martin vice president and general manager, and Sam Olens, state Attorney General.

“We’re real excited about our honorees because they epitomize our community,” said Bonner. “When you’re talking about an awards ceremony, you want people to leave saying they were well-deserved.”

    • MESSAGE FROM THE Marietta CARDINALS  BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dear Youth Cardinal Fans and Family...
As we embark on the 15th season we are excited in the direction the Marietta Youth Football and cheerleader Organization is heading. We have a well defined plan and are focused on accomplishing our goal to be the best Youth Football Organization in Georgia. We have bolstered our Board of Directors with individuals who have extensive knowledge of football and, even greater knowledge of business, organization and structure.

With growth there will be growing pains and adjustments. However in order to grow you must be willing to allow and accept change, and let negativity and all those that contribute to negativity go elsewhere. The result of this is now part harmony and the ability to accomplish our goal which is:

To make our KIDS the main focus by challenging them to be the best that they can be in the classroom first and then on the field.

We have very experienced Coaches at all Age Groups. We are prepared to have multiple teams in any age group.   Our head coaching staffs have over 70 years of combined coaching experience
